Pine Furniture restoration

BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED (BY SNELLING ASSOCIATES) BLANKET BOX

Not all fine furniture has to be ‘brown’ (mahogany, oak, walnut etc.)!

Indeed, pine furniture can look superb, particularly if it is aged and does not have the horrid (almost orange) lacquer common to much modern, mass manufactured pine furniture.  In fact, the antique restoration in Surrey that we undertake frequently involves pine furniture – which can be made to look fantastic!

Of course, a lot of pine furniture has been painted (sometimes not very well) which completely hides the colour and texture of the wood.  This is sometimes a shame as, once stripped and properly restored, antique pine furniture can look magnificent.  Indeed, it is often the perfect type of furniture for flats and houses that lack a lot of natural light.

Sadly, many people throw away perfectly good pine furniture because it is heavily painted and looks terrible!  This is a shame as the restoration of pine furniture can result in pieces that not just look great – but also have real value.

The problem with stripping pine furniture is that it is impossible to know quite what lies behind the paintwork before work begins.  Sometimes the stripping process can end up damaging the piece concerned and occasionally it can reveal poor workmanship and an object unworthy of further restoration.  However, on the whole, stripping usually reveals a fine piece of pine furniture that has been well crafted and has natural beauty.

Of course, the stripping of pine furniture is only a part of the restoration of pine furniture.  Generally, some kind of repair is needed and then the wood surface has to be prepared carefully before the application of wax (best of all!) or varnish – together with the replacement or restoration of hinges and locks.

As you can see from the pine blanket box in the image above, fine restoration of pine furniture can result in a joyful piece of antique furniture – sufficient to enhance any room!

Incidentally, the blanket box shown was originally heavily painted, very battered and about to be thrown away by its owner.  Now, however, it is a prized possession.

So, if you need furniture restoration in Surrey and are concerned as to whether we only deal with ‘brown’ furniture – worry not!  In fact, if you have pieces of pine furniture that you would like restoring then do contact us.  We can give you a free quotation and transform your piece of pine furniture into something that you will treasure…
